Self-Build Home Diary – 3

Timber frame self build

Even on a windy winter’s day it is easy to imagine how incredible this home will be when finished. Driving down a country lane towards a small West Sussex village, the site can be seen set back from the road with a backdrop of the rolling South Down hills. Birds are happily singing away whilst the timber frame is going up, the plot swiftly becoming recognizable as a home.

The clients are currently living in two mobile homes on site, enabling them to keep abreast of progress and easily organize meetings with those working on the build. Last week the Scandia site agent in charge of managing the project, ran through the exterior finish of the property with the clients; the couple have chosen a local sandstone quarried less than 5 miles away that is typical of the area. Fittleworth stone is a beautiful soft yellow colour that is used on many properties in rural West Sussex. Sahtas brick lintels will arch over the windows similar to the local village pub, the look will be interesting and in-keeping.

Sahtas Roof tiles have also been selected and the traditional timber casement windows have been measured up ready to order. Guttering is next on the list to be decided and the internal pocket doors will need to be confirmed soon as the interior walls are scheduled to go up shortly.
