Futureproof Your New Home

June 19, 2026

With the UK experiencing record-breaking temperatures in May, many self-builders’ will be thinking about how to design a home that stays comfortable during the warmer months.

New home solar shading

Here are a few design tips to keep your new timber frame home cool:

☀️ Good Insulation – quality insulation doesn’t just keep your home warm in winter, it can also help reduce heat transfer in summer, keeping indoor temperatures more comfortable.

☀️ Strategic Glazing – energy-efficient double or triple glazing with low-E coatings can help limit heat gain. Consider the orientation of your home too, with particular attention to south- and west-facing elevations.

☀️ Solar Shading – incorporating both external and internal shading can make a big difference. Planting trees, installing pergolas or overhangs, and using thermal blinds, curtains or shutters can all help reduce direct solar gain.

A cooler home starts with thoughtful design. Small decisions made during planning can deliver years of comfort, while also helping to reduce energy costs.
