John Durance, who runs his own architectural business, designed the ‘Hickory’ for himself and his wife Thelma to fit onto their fairly narrow building plot, and subsequently engaged Scandia-Hus to manufacture the timber-frame for its construction.

The shape of the site made it necessary to position the entrance at one gable end, and the surprise that greets you as you step through the entrance hall and into the vast open-plan sitting room, dining hall and kitchen area is astounding.
This breathtaking room is open right up to the apex and is flooded with light from three large roof lights as well as from four sets of triple-glazed patio doors.

The total cost of the project (including building set, shell erection and construction) will depend on site conditions as well as on your final specification and your chosen method of construction, i.e. self-build, project management, use of a nominated main contractor or a combination of these methods. These estimated square foot prices are inclusive of building set, shell erection, window fit and construction costs. The price includes delivery to mainland site. The building set includes the timber frame with a fully boarded roof, insulation, 15mm plasterboard, plasterboard screws, Swedish triple glazed windows and external doors. Also included are Swedish internal doors, skirting boards, coving, architrave, insulated loft hatch and ladder, open or closed treat staircase and mechanical ventilation system. The estimate assumes standard foundation requirements and a good, above average specification of finishing materials.
