Bungalow designs

The origin of the bungalow has its roots in the India of Bengal. There, the common native dwelling and the geographic area both had the same root word, bangala.

When the British came across these eighteenth century single storey huts, they adapted them for use as summer retreats in the Himalayas for their colonial administrators and, taking inspiration from the army tent, the English cottage and sources as exotic as the Persian verandah, early bungalow designers clustered dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms around central living rooms, thereby creating the essential floor plan of the bungalow.

The Brits subsequently brought back this economical and practical type of dwelling from the East, and the first examples were designed and built in this country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

From their exotic beginnings, bungalows still remain a firm favourite with our customers, ranging from low-maintenance retirement homes to strikingly stylish villas of luxurious proportions. In this section we wish to show you some of the diversity of single-storey homes designed and built for (or by) our customers, and let them tell their own 'full story'.
