Three-storey designs

How high can one build a timber-frame structure?

Research and practice show that four to five storeys are now quite common. However, most individual homes stop with three, and then the third floor is often incorporated into the roof space or the basement. This is particularly appropriate on sloping sites, where the house can be designed to follow the natural contours of the land.

For the right location, a three-storey house can be designed to make the best use of a restricted site. Conversely, a large site may also benefit from a more impressive, three-storey design. On this website page we have elected to show two different standard three-storey homes; one suited to a narrow town site and the second one a traditional design equally suited for a town or country location.
